Torrechiara

Texts by Mario Scalini, Alessandra Mordacci
2021 / 96 PAGES
A compendium on the castle of Torrechiara, one of the most fascinating places in the Parma area, located in an extremely evocative spot with a wealth of history, and wonderfully frescoed by famous painters during the Renaissance.
Situated on the Parma hillside, and built starting from 1448 at the behest of Pier Maria Rossi, the castle of Torrechiara blends the function of a fortress with the elegance and lavishness of an aristocratic residence, in a rare balance. The book, with a text by the art historian Alessandra Mordacci, reveals the wonders preserved within, but also the history of the building and the secrets of its architecture, with the proportional relationships between the various parts of the buildings, inspired by Pythagorean geometry and the philosophical concepts that influenced Renaissance art. Browsing through the rooms of the castle, the reader will be able to admire the grotesque frescoes of the playful "Acrobats Room" and the decorations that recall mythological or landscape themes in the other rooms. Above all, we will focus on the "Golden Room", with the beautiful frescoes attributed to Bonifacio Bembo, evoking the love between Pier Maria Rossi and his lover Bianca Pellegrini, but also highlighting the vastness of Pier Maria's domains and his good governance. A harmonious journey, with numerous images, within one of the most spectacular monuments in the Parma area.
