The adventures of Captain Alonso de Contreras in his own words, from when he set off at the age of 14 to serve the king in autumn 1595 to the end of the year 1630, when he wrote the account of his life. Though not yet old enough when he joined the army, Contreras proved himself a skilled and well-trained soldier. He was recruited by Captain Mejìa’s company, and one night during a European voyage, the squad corporal of the (respected by Contreras as if he were the king), told Contreras to follow him by order of the captain. Thus Contreras abandoned the army and set off to sail the Mediterranean, facing all sorts of amusing and intriguing situations.
