It is often hard to distinguish fabled animals from zoological animals and inevitably, the imagination prevails over observation in certain cases. The octopus offers one of the most instructive examples of such crystallisation.
The octopus, which in ancient illustrations wraps ships with its tentacles and carries them down with it to the bottom of the ocean, is the singular topic of this book. Through a surprising investigation, Roger Caillois of the French Academy shows how the imagination has, over the centuries, subjected this animal form to an entire series of metamorphoses that is superbly indifferent to reality. The mythology of Caillois' octopus in this essay is similar, though in a marine environment, to those of the spider, the bat and the leech, all animals that play a part in the fantastic and infernal fauna; but it is also an elegant lesson in method that shows with which tools it is possible to grasp the subterranean syntax of our imagination, which emerges above all (but not only) in dreams, metaphors, fables.

Ci sono stati filosofi che non hanno esitato a identificare il reale col razionale. Ho la certezza che un’altra audacia, che si fondasse su un gran numero di indagini meticolose e che le provocasse, farebbe scoprire la falsariga delle analogie fondate e delle connessioni discrete che compongono la logica dell’immaginario.
