The first tome on ancient works up to the 15th century is followed by this second catalogue dedicated to the 16th-century paintings in the Galleria Nazionale of Parma.
In 1545 Parma became the capital of the Farnese dukedom and the city began a process of promotion as one of the major cultural centres of the 16th century. Indeed, Parma could boast of personalities such as Correggio and Parmigianino, who created a true school that would be exported throughout Europe in the following decades. There is therefore no doubt that the 16th century was a crucial century for art in the Parma area, and this is why this publication only examines this period of time, which bequeathed a considerable number of paintings that today form part of the 16th-century itinerary traced by the museum’s collections and documented here through texts written by a large group of scholars.
