Edited by art historian Lucia Fornari Schianchi, this publication stems from the need to create an annotated catalogue of one of the most important art galleries in the world, the Galleria Nazionale di Parma.
In spite of the loss suffered when Charles of Bourbon decided to transfer the Farnese collection to Naples, the Galleria Nazionale di Parma still remains one of the art galleries with the most works in the world: there are approximately two thousand. The first attempt to compile a catalogue was by Corrado Ricci, as director of the Gallery from 1894 to 1896, then called Regia Galleria di Parma, but it contained only a few hundred works. Heir to this first attempt, this volume, the first of five tomes, contains for the first time a catalogue raisonné of all the works in the gallery from Antiquity to the end of the 15th century, with entries written by a group of experts specifying their provenance, stylistic aspects, restorations undergone, and any unpublished attributions formulated. The catalogue is preceded by a series of essays that examine more general aspects of the Gallery, from its history to its museographic renovation over the years.
